Harrison Ford Talks ‘Ender’s Game’ at CinemaCon

Harrison Ford did a brief Q&A session with reporters at CinemaCon last week and talked a bit about Ender’s Game. See the video below.

Ford admitted he hadn’t read the book before he got the script, but it sounds as though he may have picked it up since wrapping the production.

Were you always a big fan of Ender’s Game?

No, I didn’t know the book before I read the script, so I really came to the project through the script.

Is it easier to approach a project through a book?

Sometimes it’s more difficult because books are books and movies are movies and they’re not always the same, the same craftsman is not always involved. I think it’s a very interesting book and the film, I think, is going to be great.

What was it about the script that you really liked? What about the Ender’s Game script stood out for you?

I just thought it was something we have not seen. I thought the story was prescient about some of the things we’re seeing in our lives right now and it was written 20 years ago, I guess. I thought it had a interesting moral question behind it, which is articulated in the film and I thought it would really be a good summer movie on top of that.

How was it working with such a young cast?

I’ve worked with young people before. I have had children of my own. I’m familiar with shorter people.

    Lionsgate

Reports on Twitter are streaming in indicating that the trailer for Ender’s Game was shown at Lionsgate’s Product Presentation at CinemaCon, currently happening in Las Vegas, NV.

Lionsgate recently released a teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which was a pretty lengthy teaser at 2:26. It’s unclear at this time how long the teaser will be for Ender’s Game.

The response from Summit has been that this is not the final trailer and some temporary VFX was used, so it doesn’t sound like it’s ready yet for public viewing. As far as the trailer release goes, it still sounds like the only concrete information to go on is that the trailer release will be attached to Star Trek: Into Darkness next month.

  • Variety Talks to Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld

Variety Talks to Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld

    CinemaCon

CinemaCon is in full swing in Las Vegas and Variety spoke to the various actors receiving special recognition at the convention going on this week in Las Vegas, Nevada. Among those they interviewed are three Ender’s Game cast members.

Harrison Ford, who is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, was quick to point out that Ender’s Game is different from Blade Runner.

“It’s just a whole different canvas — no replicants — and character and world view.”

Asa Butterfield, who will be given the Rising Star Award, gave high praise to the script, which he read while studying hard in school.

“It was the best script I’d read, and I thought how much fun it would be to be in zero gravity with laser guns.”

And last but not least, Hailee Steinfeld, who will be recognized as the Female Star of Tomorrow, talked about the fun of hanging with a cast of mostly boys her age.

“At that point I’d wanted to work with kids my age, and was looking forward to it,” she recalls. “The catch is that they were all boys, so it was 3½ months with a bunch of guys, which is not a bad thing.”

Lionsgate’s product presentation is on Thursday, but still no word on whether anything new from Ender’s Game will be released.

    Hailee-Steinfeld

CinemaCon has previously announced that they would be bestowing awards upon Harrison Ford (Lifetime Achievement) and Asa Butterfield (Rising Star of 2013) and today it’s been announced that yet another Ender’s Game star will be receiving an award at the convention in April.

Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Petra Arkanian, will receive an award for 2013 Female Star of Tomorrow.

“Having already garnered an Oscar® nomination, not to mention international acclaim for her big screen debut in ‘True Grit,’ Hailee Steinfeld will continue to show audiences this coming year just how amazing a young actress she is with five new films set to hit theaters,” noted Managing Director Mitch Neuhauser. “Can you imagine working opposite Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in your very first film and under the direction of Joel and Ethan Coen no less? We cannot think of a more exemplary young actress to be named this year’s ‘CinemaCon Female Star of Tomorrow.’”

The award will be given during the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards on Thursday, April 18 at Caesar’s Palace.

With three cast members receiving awards, it’s starting to sound like the Lionsgate product presentation (to feature several unnamed special guests) may be a great panel for any Ender’s Game fans in attendance.

  • Lionsgate to Showcase 2013 Release Schedule at CinemaCon

Lionsgate to Showcase 2013 Release Schedule at CinemaCon

    CinemaCon

At this year’s CinemaCon, which will take place from April 15-18, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lionsgate will be hosting a two hour product presentation. The schedule of events was updated today on March 11.

The presentation, which will take place on April 18 from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM in The Colosseum on the Casino level of Caesar’s Palace will be highlighting their 2013 lineup. Since Summit is a Lionsgate company, they may use this presentation to show a bit of Ender’s Game.

    Merchandise, perhaps? Character posters? Teaser?

I’ve never been to CinemaCon, so I have no idea what studios would typically show. I know I’d love to see official Army banners or scrolls (imagine hanging that on your wall!), t-shirts, and posters for each major character. What would you like to see?

The schedule mentions several special guests, which could be good news for both Hunger Games and Ender’s Game fans. Hopefully as things get closer, they’ll provide more details about who will be attending. If I had to guess, I’d say Harrison Ford is one of them, since he’ll be at the convention to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Registration for the con is still open, but the price is pretty steep at $1,040 for non-members.

We could not be more honored to present this years ‘CinemaCon Lifetime Achievement Award’ to such a remarkable actor, Harrison Ford.”
