    Harrison Ford Talks Ender’s Game

    Harrison Ford at CinemaCon 2013.

Finally a decently meaty interview with Harrison Ford about the Ender’s Game movie! Ford talks to Quint from Aint It Cool News about filming, Gavin Hood as a director, working with kids in general and Asa Butterfield in particular, and his acting choices (with only a little bit of Han Solo and Indiana Jones thrown in at the end). Some favorite parts are:

Harrison Ford: I’m also trying to provide the director with options in the cutting room. […] If a certain scene had to be left out for time purposes or something, he would have options, which would allow elements of character to be expressed in that scene.

Quint: [Asa Butterfield] came across as someone who wears his heart on his sleeve. He didn’t seem like he was putting up any barriers, if you know what I mean.

Harrison Ford: He’s there. That’s a wonderful thing to find when you’re acting with somebody… that they actually fucking show up.

  • Director Gavin Hood on Violence in the Ender’s Game Movie

Director Gavin Hood on Violence in the Ender’s Game Movie

    Gavin Storyboard

Back in December, Crystal posted an editorial about whether or not the upcoming Ender’s Game movie needed to go as far as the book in terms of violence. In Pondering the Fate of Stilson, she argued that having Ender kill Stilson before he even gets to Battle School may not only be not necessary and severely stretch credibility (look a the size difference between Caleb Thaggard and Asa Butterfield), it may also be harmful in that it may lead audiences to despise Ender or even encourage people to commit violence themselves.

Now, Ender’s Game director Gavin Hood has finally addressed the matter in an interview with Cinemablend’s Kelly West. Here is what he had to say:

I think that all those elements of bullying, which is a great theme in the world right now, and how kids deal with being bullied, which we know is so powerful in the book, thatʼs in the movie. But what I try to do as a filmmaker in terms of handling questions of violence, is I donʼt believe in showing violence for violenceʼs sake and repetitive violence. For me, what I have found is an act of violence can be so sudden, whatʼs more interesting is the aftermath. And so, our movie is not, I hope, in any way, really violent. I donʼt want it to be a violent film, but the effect of the moment of violence on the psyche of the protagonist and the people around him is profound as it is in the book. It has to be, and so those key scenes in the book –Bonzo in the shower– are absolutely in the movie, and they shock in their suddenness, but they are not in any way indulgent. Iʼm not interested in showing blood flying around the room or any of, none of that. Whatʼs more important is to see how these young character handle it and thatʼs why I think itʼs an important film. As a parent, I want my kids to go to a movie and not be spoken down to, deal with difficult themes, but be able to talk about it, not celebrate that, just talk about it.

Looks like Gavin Hood has put a lot of thought into the question of how much violence is really necessary in the movie to have the desired effect on the characters and the audience, and how much would really just be violence for violence’s sake. He seems to have a pretty decent grasp on where the thin line runs between dramaturgy and pornography. Sounds like we are going to be sufficiently shocked, without being traumatised by watching graphic displays of kids dying in puddles of their own blood. (my emphasis)

  • The Ender’s Game Experience at Comic Con 2013

The Ender’s Game Experience at Comic Con 2013

Yesterday, the staff of EnderWiggin.net attended a special press preview of the Ender’s Game Experience at Comic Con and we were completely overwhelmed by everything. We walked in and immediately you see giant posters and a big screen tv showing the trailer on the wall.

The first room you walk into is the Wiggin living room with a hi-tech tv and uniforms displayed. In the next room there was a replica of a shuttle seating area (Bernard arms beware!) with another large tv showing a Battle School video.

    image

Walk further and you see the Battle School army logos on the wall just before entering a classroom which people could sit in. Touch the screen and you could scroll through stills and screenshots of the trailer while watching a video about Earth’s hero, Mazer Rackham, which showed the mother ship exploding after Mazer fires a sit into the ship.

Past that comes what Bob Orci told us was his favorite of the sets in the Experience, the gate. There was Gate B, with a huge mural of Ender with the words “The Enemy’s Gate Is Down” on the wall. Turn to your left and there’s a HUGE gate serving as an archway to a moving digital mural of the Battle Room where fans could pose.

    image

Walk into the next room and you encounter a giant star about 10 feet high. No idea if these are actual sizes, but this one is massive. On the wall in that room was a huge mural of Ender flying in zero gravity.

    image

The final area features costume and prop displays including uniforms, Petra’s training ball set, Ender’s bracelet whole at the Veteran’s retreat, and the flash guns.

    image

There was a mannequin of Ender in his flash suit and the new character banners released online today hung from the ceiling. The final piece was the window to Earth that Ender states out of in the trailer.

I’m currently camped out for the panel tomorrow, better photos will come Friday!

When I first heard of the Ender’s Game Fan Experience, I was in shock. It sounded like they were dragging the entire set to Comic Con for something so epic it just couldn’t be believed!

Thanks to a photo from @DanoFernandez, we now see now massive the thing is shaping up to be! It’s obviously still being built and I can just imagine the chaos those people are going through to get this up in time for tomorrow.

We’ll be there taking video and interviewing fans. Be sure to follow EnderWiggin.net on Instagram for a photo journey of the experience!

  • EnderCast Episode 21 – Never Again

EnderCast Episode 21 – Never Again

    EnderCastSide

It’s less than 9 days to Comic Con and Kelly and I still found time to podcast! For last week’s episode (which came out late due to busy schedules) we went with the title Never Again, since it was Independence Day weekend here in the US.

    Topics included:

    • Ender’s Game panel time has been announced and we’re ever so slightly put off that Ender’s Game has to share a short hour with Divergent
    • The Comic Con swag for Ender’s Game looks epic and we shamelessly gush about it all
    • Pretty much the entire cast is descending upon San Diego, some of them to do a signing
    • Early details of ‘Launchies in Line’

    Listen to Episode 21 here.

  • Ender’s Game Cast Watch #4

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #4

Another week of me stalking the Ender’s Game cast on the nets has come to a close. Let’s see what the kids have been up to.

Asa Butterfield has been all kinds of busy. Let’s start with the picture that finally made him Instagram-famous (and I wonder why):

    4asa_boat20130704

Looks like that was the last day in Greece, before he had to return to London for his Prom!

    4asa_prom_20130705

Also, in preparation of his appearance at the Ender’s Game panel on Thursday, July 18, Asa went shopping at Carnaby Street, London. Will he wow you all with his fashion sense?

    4asa_fashion

Personally, I’m slightly flashed by the pattern mix. But I’m sure that’s just me.

Speaking of Comic Con, Aramis Knight has confirmed that he will be signing autographs! He even gave a tentative date! Watch out for him on Saturday at the Summit booth! After Jimmy Pinchak, Aramis is the second non-panelist announcing that he is going to SDCC, but Khylin Rhambo, Brandon Soo Hoo, Conor Carroll and Caleb Thaggard are rumored to be there as well.  While the kids are getting excited for the big event, Harrison Ford seems to have the time and leisure for a trip to Peru.

Hailee Steinfeld has been caught up in other projects. Nevertheless she had the time to tweet about her new magazine cover as well as an interview she did about her upcoming film Romeo and Juliet. Watch it below!

    4hailee_magazine_20130704

Moises Arias has a new film … or rather, a video. He appears in his friend Willow Smith’s new music video “Summer Fling”.

Finally, Suraj Partha seems to have a little less time for fun stuff this summer, as he is studying for his SAT! I’m sure he will ace it, though, just like he just aced his AP EURO class (according to his facebook). He did, however, have the time to post a video of himself singing and playing the piano in Paris. So romantic!
