    Ender's Game Title

With a release date nearly 500 days away, it’s no surprise that there won’t be panels, big giveaways, or cast signings at SDCC this year, but that doesn’t mean nothing’s going on for Ender fans.

San Diego Comic Con 2012 is officially getting under way tonight with Preview Night, so here’s a quick guide for people that may not have been following all the news regarding the presence of ‘Ender’s Game’ at the con this year.

Nonso Anozie: ‘Ender’s Game’ Will Be Cutting Edge

Nonso Anozie was in attendance this past Sunday at the London Film and Comic Con and spoke with RedCarpetNewsTV about ‘Ender’s Game’. He explains his role as drill sergeant Dap, “He’s a real hardass at first to Ender. Really bad guy, but at the end you really start to see there’s a reason why he’s been so hard on them.”

Anozie mentions that he still has to head back to the States to finish up some more work on the film, but mentions how much fun it was. “It’s going to have a lot of things that no one’s seen before. A lot of computer graphics, a lot of visual effects, kind of cutting edge. Stuff that nobody’s seen before.”

Makes the wait that much longer, doesn’t it? Only 478 days to go!

  • Ender’s Game Production Jackets

    Ender’s Game Production Jackets

Cast members have been tweeting about receiving their Ender’s Game production jackets and stand-in Kelvin Harrison posted a photo of his (above). Looks like a cool jacket and hopefully we get to see something similar for sale next year when they begin marketing the movie.

While the font and logo shown was used for production purposes and also for the promo poster seen at the Licensing Expo, that may still change once they begin releasing things for the movie at an official capacity.

That just makes this one that much more awesome and collectible, though!

Suraj Partha took a photo of a keychain with a dragon on it and the caption “Dragon Army”, though it’s not clearly whether this is actually the Dragon Army logo. It most likely is not, as I’d imagine he’d get in a bit of trouble for posting something like that.

Very nice keychain regardless! These photos have been added to the Cast Photos gallery.

  • VIDEO: Asa Butterfield at the Young Hollywood Awards

VIDEO: Asa Butterfield at the Young Hollywood Awards

Red Carpet Tips has posted a brief video interview with Asa Butterfield at the Young Hollywood Awards and they talk to him about what he’s wearing and how he did his hair.

Now, some of you are probably wondering, Valentine, why are you wasting our time with this silliness? Just bear with me.

While some of you may find it totally irrelevant to be listening to Asa’s red carpet tips, what’s interesting about this video is that it’s a good way for us to hear the change in Asa’s voice and see the difference in his physique.

Most people trying to get to know Ender before the movie comes out inevitably end up watching Hugo, which was Asa’s last movie. The problem with that is that while the movie just came out last year, it was filmed in June 2010, which was a full two years ago and done when Asa was only 13.

Compare photos and you’ll see he looks very different.

The last time we posted video of an interview with Asa was in January when he attended the Critic’s Choice Awards. Compare that with how deep his voice is in that interview to the red carpet video above and you can definitely notice a difference. Compare the red carpet video with clips or interviews during the filming of Hugo and you’ll see a more obvious difference in pitch.

So just how does one get to know Asa Butterfield as he’ll be in Ender’s Game if he hasn’t done anything since the award-winning Hugo?

With red carpet fashion report videos, of course. Asa looks like he’d like to be anywhere else in the world than talking hair gel and clothes with the reporter, but that just makes the video that much cuter. His advice for young actors?

“Get your mum to dress you.”

  • Khy Rhambo Talks ‘First Family’ and ‘Ender’s Game’

Khy Rhambo Talks ‘First Family’ and ‘Ender’s Game’

While attending Byron Allen’s Launch Party, Khylin Rhambo (Dink Meeker) talked with JJ Snyder of the Red Carpet Report about his show ‘First Family‘ and ‘Ender’s Game‘.

In ‘First Family‘, Rhambo plays Charles, son of the President of the United States. The pilot was filmed earlier this year and he had nothing but good things to say about the experience. “All the cast, they’re awesome, so I’m pretty excited to see how it turns out.”

Talk quickly turned to ‘Ender’s Game‘ and Rhambo was very excited to have worked with the likes of Harrison Ford, Viola Davis, and Sir Ben Kingsley. “That was a really good learning experience for me as an actor. I’m really excited. That was my first movie so it was really cool that I got to experience that.”

When asked to explain about his role and the movie’s premise, Khylin was happy to give a quick rundown. “I play Dink Meeker and he’s like a boy genius and he’s close to the main character and we have this big journey of fighting these aliens. It’s a really cool story that I’m excited to be a part of. The books are amazing. I’m stoked, I can’t even believe this is happening.”

Snyder asked whether the formics were done with puppets or CGI and it’s not surprising that he said they never actually saw them, since an encounter like this never happens in the books. “But I saw the whole layout of them.” said Rhambo.

  • Nominate ‘Ender’s Game for NPR’s Top 100 Books List

Nominate ‘Ender’s Game for NPR’s Top 100 Books List

    Ender's Game

Our friends over at Ender’s Ansible have re-kindled a campaign they started last year to get Ender’s Game onto NPR’s Best 100 Books, which has just recently opened up to nominations for this year’s list. Last year’s category focused on science fiction and fantasy and thanks to fans, Ender’s Game made it on the list as #3. You can check out last year’s list here.

This year NPR has chosen a Young Adult theme for their list.

To nominate Ender’s Game (the series), you’ll need to either log in or register at NPR and then comment with your nominations. They’ll let you nominate up to five books at once, so if you’re a big Harry Potter or Hunger Games fan, you won’t have to choose Ender’s Game over those, you just need to include it in your list!

Even if other people nominate the books you want to nominate, you should still comment if you can since nominations count as votes later down the line. The rules:

    1. Limit yourself to five titles per post. Don’t hesitate to nominate a book that someone else has already listed; your entry will count as a vote that will help that title progress to the next round.

    2. Nominate “multivolume novels” as one work. The Harry Potter series or the Hunger Games trilogy, for example, will be judged as single, collective works — so don’t bother listing the separate titles in the series.

    3. That said, not all series are “multivolume novels.” To be judged as a collective work, the books in a series must be written by the same originating author or authors and must tell a more or less continuous story — usually about a consistent group of characters. So, you can’t nominate the whole Goosebumps series as such, but you can nominate The Horror at Camp Jellyjam as an individual work.

Thanks in advance for helping nominate the series!

  • Production Blog Photos: Gate to the Battle Room

Production Blog Photos: Gate to the Battle Room

    Null G

Even though principal photography is now truly over, with Asa Butterfield returning to his home in the United Kingdom yesterday, Bob Orci managed to give the fans one more production blog entry to oogle over. In what appears to be concept art of the gate to the Battle Room, we get to see another glimpse of the rounded doors we previously saw in the background of a photo of Mr. Orci.

On the floor are the ominous words: “WARNING: NULL G BEYOND THIS LINE”

Ask anyone to quote ‘Ender’s Game‘ and the majority will probably say, “The enemy’s gate is down.” Yet it can be easy to forget that it’s only “down” in the battle room. The concept of up and down can be so hard to deal with that it induces vomiting, something that happens to some of Ender’s fellow Launchies on the way up from Earth. Part of Ender’s training included teaching his soldiers that quick reminder of how to re-orient themselves once they entered zero gravity.

The Battle School operates with gravity, which means that up until the soldiers enter the room, the gate looks like any other doorway. Look down at the floor to read this warning and your brain will likely automatically attribute the floor as being down. Enter the Battle Room and down could shift to being above your head.

    B Gate

This photo shows “B Gate”, though it’s hard to tell if this is artwork or an actual still. The inner area looks to be padded and quite wide, so it’s possible this is the outer door and the null g warning appears on the floor on an inner chamber pictured to the right.

Orci gave a bit of background on production designers Ben Proctor and Sean Haworth by asking them about their fan background and they didn’t disappoint.

For Ben, he read the founding short-story at age twelve, and has been a fan ever since. “Fans of the book will hopefully recognize what they’ve been imagining for years, but also be impressed with the level of detail. And as a fan, you have an actual emotional reaction finally seeing the Zero-G action you’ve always visualized.”

As for Sean, having read the book in his twenties, [he] vividly remembers not only the science and technology, but the terrifying human elements behind it all.

“I was torn between wanting to be Ender but never having to be faced with that kind of a future,” he said.

Just looking at the photos posted, you have to wonder just how set designers go about taking concept art and making that a reality. Do they order parts? Do they literally make them from scratch themselves? It’s mind boggling, really.

“We tried to imbue the spaces and vehicles with a gritty, engineered realism that would help sell the seriousness of the training our hero kids are going through. The visual style of the Formics, on the other hand, needed to be both exotic and beautiful to represent a society not deserving of extinction.”

Ask them to describe the Formic world and you’ll get excited tales, imagining a Formic method of manufacture that was distinctly inhuman — a kind of biological 3D printer, with the drones building living spaces and spacecraft layer by layer.

It’s interesting to hear their perspectives on the need to make the Formic sets exotic and beautiful because they could have easily gone the other way and made their sets simply terrifying (Aliens comes to mind) or simply more technologically advanced than the humans. To read the full entry, head over to Ender’s Game Blog.

With production at an end, it’s understandable that the production blog comes to an end too, but hopefully we get to see something else down the line as they move into post-production. Eventually, we’ll probably see the launch of a full blown website, Facebook page, and Twitter. Hopefully that’s not too far down the road.

And in other news, we’ve just cracked through the 500 day mark to the premiere of Ender’s Game! Woohoo!
