Forbes Estimates Post-War Value of Ender Wiggin

    EG-Trailer78

The other day, Forbes did an article about how they do something pretty cool called the “Fictional Fifteen” in which they determine who are the richest fictional characters out there. And while Ender unfortunately did not make the list (he’d have ranked #1, beating out the likes of Scrooge McDuck and Carlisle Cullen) because of too many unknown factors, they did lay out how they came to the conclusion that he’s worth about as much as Bill Gates at a cool $66 billion dollars.

After the Formic War in Ender’s Game, there was a lot of geopolitical strife, conquest and wars. But at the end of it all, Ender’s brother Peter Wiggin created a one-world government. It’s stated in the books that Starways Congress was basically the next step in evolution from that government, so we’ll say that the Yen became the world’s official currency when Peter Wiggin ended up running everything.

Card’s universe post-Ender’s Game is remarkably geopolitically (and technologically) stable. Three thousand years in the future, the only technology that’s really advanced significantly is genetic engineering –in part because humans took advanced technology from the alien Formics, but never figured out the physics of why that technology worked. So we’ll operate under the assumption that the economics of Ender’s universe is similarly stable.

So now we can make a guess at the value of the Yen before it was used as the base for the new Starways Congress dollar, and figure out how Ender’s year 5189 net worth of $400 trillion SCD translates to 2013 U.S. Dollars.

    […]

Ender’s $400 trillion Starways Congress dollars are worth about 16,920,473,773,265 modern-day Yen. If we convert that to U.S. dollars at the 1985 exchange rate, the figure we arrive at is a little more than $66.6 billion. That means Ender Wiggin’s is worth about as much as Bill Gates.

Don’t we all wish even more now that we had a friend like Jane?

You may have seen me gushing about it on Twitter. On EnderCast, I may have talked about how it made me cry and scream and tremble like an idiot. The “new footage” at Comic Con was a trailer, not a clip. That trailer is now set to make its online debut next Tuesday, August 6, 2013.

Are you ready for it? It’s got explosions, Formics, the Great Invasion, Valentine, Ender, arguments between the teachers, and much more. And you’ll have seen it in less than 4 days.

Be sure to tell us your thoughts on this poster! Is it everything you wanted? Does it make you emotional because it means we’re just 90 days from release?

For me, the poster looks cool, but I admit to being slightly disappointed that it’s so similar to the first one. Still, love the new tagline!

AUDIO: Ender’s Game Trailer Music from Hi-Finesse

    Hi-Finesse

Those of you that loved the Ender’s Game trailer music can now listen to the track titled ‘Opus’ by Erich Lee of Hi-Finesse, a movie and video game music production company in Santa Monica, CA.

It’s always been a mystery to me how trailer music is done. Sometimes you just hear mixes of songs, but a lot of trailers seem to have custom music not done by the film’s composer. Hi-Finesse composes custom music scored to picture, so it sounds like the trailer is cut and the music scored around it. No wonder it seemed to flawlessly integrated!

Interestingly enough, Opus was also used in the Percy Jackson trailer, which was released well before the Ender’s Game trailer.

It’s not quite so obvious, playing in the background, so I have no idea! It really sounded like Opus was scored specifically for Ender’s Game and maybe they used it for Percy beforehand?

You can listen to their work on Soundcloud. See if you can recognize the following tracks from other film trailers this year!

  • Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld Talk Flash Suits and Heights

Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld Talk Flash Suits and Heights

    Ender-Petra

We keep hearing talk about how hot the flash suits were and recently talked to costume designer Christine Bieselin-Clark about how they had to wear another layer under the suits too! In this interview with USA Today, Asa and Hailee go into further detail on what it was like to work in the wire harness and the flash suits.

The filmmakers used rigs to hoist the actors and make them feel as if they were in space. “If you’re scared of heights, you just had to get over it,” Butterfield says. “There’s nothing you can do about it. We all had a great time up there.”

Steinfeld recalls about three months spent on wires “floating around, flipping around, being thrown into pads.”

    “And shooting people,” Butterfield says.

“The list goes on,” says Steinfeld, who plays Petra Arkanian, Ender’s friend at Battle School. “I don’t really think we had time to worry about it.”

“I guess we don’t really know any different,” Steinfeld says. “It is very uncomfortable and hard at first, to say the least.”

[…] “It was like a sauna,” Butterfield says.

Because of the sound, filmmakers couldn’t run air conditioning to keep them cool, says Steinfeld, though Butterfield notes that they did have fans in their 8-pound helmets, “which kept it from fogging up.”

    […]

“I doubt they were comfortable 50 years in the future,” Butterfield figures.

“Yeah, I don’t know how we managed,” Steinfeld adds before giving him a high-five. “Maybe we’ll see. We’ll go to space in 50 years and see if the spacesuits are comfortable.”

Read the whole interview at USA Today.

Definitely sounds like they had a tough time doing the Battle Room scenes, but from what we’ve seen in the trailers so far, it looks pretty fantastic. And to think I thought my flight suit costume was too hot!
