VIDEO: Gavin Hood on How He Relates to Ender’s Game

    Hi folks,

looks like we are going to keep finding these little gems from Comic Con for a while. Here is an awesome interview Screen Rant did with Gavin Hood. He speaks about how he personally relates to the story of Ender, what Space Camp did for the kids and the filming process, how they deal with Ender realizing that “the enemy’s gate is down,” and Hood’s opinion on Orson Scott Card and his views on gay marriage.

Ender’s Game Cast Watch #7 – Power of Youth

This week’s cast watch mostly revolves around yesterday’s Variety Power of Youth event. Abigail Breslin was honored as one of five young performers for her involvement in Project Sunshine, a charity for children with disabilities, HIV and other special needs. Here is Abigail with her co-honorees Jake Austin, Quvenzhane Wallis, Nina Dobrev and Tyler Posey.

At the event, Abigail met up with her August: Osage County costar Dermot Mulroney …

    7abigail_powerofyouth

… and probably with some of her Ender’s Game buddies, because it seems that Aramis Knight and Khylin Rhambo were also in attendance. Khylin tweeted this “epic” picture of himself with Percy Jackson‘s Brandon T. Jackson and The Maze Runner‘s Dexter Darden.

    7khylin_groverdexter

Aramis met up with some friends and then posed with Tyler Posey (pun intended), tweeting: “Everyone thinks I look like this guy.” I wonder why everyone thinks that … oh wait, BECAUSE YOU DO!

Apparently, Abigail Breslin played matchmaker for Aramis Knight at some point around the time of the event. Hmm, very cryptic.

Abigail Breslin did a photoshoot with The Icon Magazine. Looks amazing.

Asa Butterfield is shooting a new movie, modding Skyrim, and letting himself be stung in the lip by wasps. (I’m still waiting for photos.) Hailee Steinfeld is seeing Bruno Mars tonight. And the Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band just started playing at the Venice Beach Summer Fest 2013. Check their WEBSITE for upcoming gigs.

PS: If you are at Venice Beach right now, Jimmy is signing a limited number of Ender’s Game posters after the gig!

I know the quality sucks a bit, and we’ll try to get a better quality one as soon as possible, but we didn’t want to keep this from you. This is the first time we’ve seen Ender and Alai together in character in the movie! The picture was taken quasi by accident by the folks of Collider, who actually just wanted a photograph of the Ender’s Game Experience classroom desks. Be that as it may, this is proof that Ender and Alai’s friendship is acknowledged in the movie!

  • Ender’s Game Cast Watch #6 – Comic-Con Edition

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #6 – Comic-Con Edition

Last week was pretty much all about Comic Con, and apart from Moises Arias and Abigail Breslin (who was sick and had to cancel only a day before she was scheduled to be on the panel) pretty much every one of the young cast was there. You have probably already seen tons of stuff, but in case you still haven’t had enough, have some more!

To start off, Cameron Gaskins (Pol Slattery) posted an awesome group pic of the minor cast hanging out together after signing autographs for an hour on Saturday.

    6cam_group

As I said, pretty much everyone was there.

After the signing, the cast member went around a bit at Comic Con, doing their own thing. Khylin Rhambo‘s thing, it seems, is taking pictures with random cosplayers. I see Batman-girl, Iron Man, and Spidey, and is that Assassin’s Creed? I’m not much of a gamer, so you have to tell me.

    6khylin_collage16khylin_collage2

Aramis Knight, on the other hand, signed more autographs while he was at it. Someone you don’t see in the group pic, but who was there at the singning as well, is Jimmy Pinchak. He took the time to visit the Ender’s Game Experience, signing up under the name of Peter Wiggin. Looks like Peter made it into battle school after all.

The rest of the cast eventually went to the Experience as well. Aramis Knight met up with Asa Butterfield to reenact the launchie shuttle experience. I kind of doubt, though, that this is what it will look like in the movie.

    6aramis_zeroG

Speaking of Asa Butterfield, he seems to have enjoyed Comic Con to the fullest. However, in this pic, taken on their first day, he and Hailee Steinfeld seem to still be confused about what’s what at SDCC.

I’m not sure whether this was taken before or after Asa and Hailee did the Ender’s Game Experience press preview, of which you’ve probably seen loads of images. Maybe you’ve even seen that awesome vid in which they walk through the sets, and in which Asa delivers his by now Tumblr-famous line “like a banana.” Wednesday night, he, Hailee and a few others attended a party organized by Summit. Here’s proof:

Yeah, selfies are never quite what you expect them to be. At least they had fun before they had to get back to Hall H-paneling, Interview-giving, photoshoot-posing and all those other tedious things that I’m sure are a big hassle.

    6hailee_collage

After a few days of hard work, Asa got to spend his last day at Comic Con undercover, finally being allowed to release his inner nerd and hang out with the REALLY cool people.

Asa Butterfield’s New Movie “X Plus Y” Starts Shooting

    Asa_X_plus_Y

Asa Butterfield has officially started working on his new movie, BBC co-financed British comedy-drama X Plus Y.

    7asa_newfilm_tweet

His attachment to the project was already reported back in March, but so far we were unable to tell if the movie was a go and when it was going to begin production. The project isn’t even listed on IMDB yet! So now, that filming is underway, let us give you a few stats:

    Title: X plus Y

Synopsis: “Teenage maths prodigy Nathan struggles with people, not least his mother, Julie, but finds comfort in numbers. Mentored by unconventional and anarchic teacher Mr Humphreys, Nathan’s talents win him a place representing GB at the International Mathematics Olympiad. When the team go to train in Taiwan, headed up by squad leader Richard, Nathan is faced with unexpected challenges – not least his new and unfamiliar feelings for his Chinese counterpart, the beautiful Zhang Mei.
From suburban England to bustling Taipei and back again, this original and heartwarming film tracks the funny, complex relationship Nathan has with his mentor who ends up learning more from Nathan than he could ever teach him. Ultimately this is Nathan’s journey to embrace the irrational nature of love.” (Female First)

    Cast:
    Asa Butterfield – Nathan
Sally Hawkins – Julie, Nathan’s mom
    Rafe Spall – Mr. Humphries
    Eddie Marsan – Richard
    Jo Yang – Zhang Mei

    Filming Locations: Sheffield, Cambridge, Taiwan

    PHOTO: New(ish) Behind-the-Scenes Picture

    Ender_Graff_on_set_Empire

Empire Magazine has released a new behind-the-scenes still from the filming of Ender’s Game. They already put it out in print in their August 2013 issue a couple of weeks ago, but this is the first time they officially used it online. In it, we see director Gavin Hood talk to Asa Butterfield and Suraj Partha about a scene that apparently happens in the battle school corridor and in which they are wearing pyjamas. Can anyone guess which scene this is? And what are those rainbow-colored rings?

VIDEO: Producer Bob Orci on Making Ender’s Game

Producer Bob Orci sat down with What’s Trending at Nerd HQ during Comic Con to talk about the process of making Ender’s Game. He speaks about getting the movie produced, casting Harrison Ford (or rather being cast by him), aging up the kids, and shooting the movie in sequence so that Ender’s physical growth would match Asa’s. I also think he and the interviewer are having a speed talking contest.

Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld Reveal Behind-the-Scenes Tidbits

    hailee-steinfeld-asa-butterfield-enders-game

Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld sat down with Moviefone (as did Harrison Ford) to chat a bit about what it was like to film Ender’s Game. They talk about funny moments, the professional atmosphere on set, and the pranks they all (including, it seems, the adults) played on each other while filming. And guess what: the Ender’s Game slang from the books made it into the movie!

My favorite part of the interview is Hailee’s recollection of a prank Gavin Hood played on her:

At the end of the film, one of the cast members, Moises Arias, who plays Bonzo Madrid, had to shave his hair for the ending scene. You know, it’s one of those things where you’re OK with it because you have to do it, but it’s also like, you know… it’s a big thing, right? So Moises handled it very well, but you could see he was a little, you know, taken aback by looking at himself in the mirror and this drastic change. And Asa and I walked on set and Gavin turns around and has a black eye. My heart dropped. I was like, “What just happened?” And he goes, “I told him. I told him that he could take it out on me because I made him shave his head. And I was literally, like, crying. I was like, “Moises would never do that. What’s happening?” And then they were like, “Just kidding! It’s makeup!”

Harrison Ford On Comic Con, Graff, and Hollywood

    enders-game-harrison-ford

In a recent interview with Moviefone (Asa and Hailee did one, too), Harrison Ford talks about Colonel Graff, how he compares to other character’s he’s played over the years, and the Hollywood studio system. The interview is pretty standard fare, but Harrison Ford is HILARIOUS!

My favorite part has to be this:

I wanted to switch gears a bit …
    [Smiles] I thought you might.

[Laughs] It’s not exactly what you expect — at least I am hoping it’s not. It may start out like that but …
[Laughs] It won’t end up like that!

OK, but give me a chance!
    Take your best shot.

Your earlier movies still make news today — “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” etc. My question to you is…
[Harrison begins drumming on the coffee table in front of him]

[Laughs]… is there one movie of yours that you wish got more attention than those movies?
That I wish got more attention? No. Well, there were movies that I think were good movies that did not receive as much attention at the time. I don’t think I remember any… oh, the one that comes to mind is “Mosquito Coast,” which I think was a really good movie and perhaps didn’t receive as much attention as it might have.
